The Belvedere houses a world famous art collection, which ranges from the Middle Ages, Austrian Baroque, Viennese Biedermeier, Viennese art around 1900, French impressionism, to the present day.

The collections are shown at three locations: the Upper Belvedere (Oberes Belvedere-OB), the Lower Belvedere (Unteres Belvedere-UB), and the Belvedere 21-B21.

The palace complex, with the Upper and Lower Palaces, the Orangerie and Palace Stables, was built according to Lucas von Hildebrandt's plans for Prince Eugene of Savoy–Carignano (1663 – 1736), the famous field marshal and diplomat in service of the Habsburgs.

In the Upper Belvedere (Oberes Belvedere), the historic Austrian State Treaty was signed in 1955, whereas today it houses part of the museum's collection with highlights by Klimt, Schiele, Funke, Monet, and van Gogh.

The main garden is situated between the Lower and the Upper Belvedere and extends over three large terraces, was designed  by Dominique Girard and includes all the essential elements of Baroque garden architecture: symmetrical flower parterres, water basins, tiers and steps, trimmed hedges, and more.

The Belvedere is also a venue for cultural, corporate and private events, such as private exhibitions, receptions, weddings...
