The Basilica of Sant' Apollinare in Classe, housing the remains of the patron saint of the city, Apollinare, was built in the 6th century and is one of the greatest examples of an early Christian basilica.
It preserves its beautiful original structure and is famous for the splendid mosaics of its apse basin and the ancient marble sarcophagi of the archbishops, along the side aisles, as well as the representation of Apollinare, the founder and first bishop of the Ravenna church with his arms raised in the ancient gesture of prayer.
The basilica, constitutes, together with the museum CLASSIS Ravenna and the archaeological area of the Antico Porto, the Classe Archaeological Park.
