The Frisian Museum

Museums & Art Centres
The Frisian Museum (Het Fries Museum), established in 1881, is dedicated to the arts, crafts and history of the historic and proud province of Friesland, from the 13th until the 21st century. One of the various highlights is the Mata Hari Hall, dedicated to the life of Margaretha Zelle, alias Mata Hari, the historic dancer and spy.

During its history, the museums has received many donations such as the bequest of King William III, containing many portraits from the Court of the Frisian Stadholders.

Since 2013 the Fries Museum has been transferred to completely newly built museum, which was made possible by the Frisian architect Abe Bonnema, who left 18 million Euros to the museum upon his death in 2001.
