Gruyères Castle, dating back to the 134th century, has been inhabited through the centuries by the counts of Gruyères, the bailiffs of Fribourg, the families Bovy and Balland from Geneva, whereas it was bought again by the state if Fribourg in 1938 to become opened to the public.
