Lamb House has been the home of the writer Henry James from 1898 to 1916. Also the authors E. F. Benson and Rumor Godden have lived here. The house was given by the widow of Henry James's nephew to the National Trust in 1950
Today the house is used as a writer's house museum. James had a great affection to his garden, which has been restored.
Further back into history, King George I was a guest here after his ship stranded nearby in 1726. James Lamb, the owner of the house, offered the King his bedroom, while his wife gave birth to a son at the same time. The son was names George and the King accepted to be his godfather.
