Primate's Palace

Castles & Country Houses
The Primate's Palace is a neoclassical palace built from 1778-1781, commissioned by Cardinal József Batthyány, and designed by architect Melchior Hefele. Today the palace is the office of the mayor of Bratislava, and open to the public.

On 26 December, 1805, the Treaty of Bratislava was signed in the palace’s stunning Hall of Mirrors, which is today also used for hosting concerts. Along with the Hall of Mirrors are the five salons furnished with period furniture and named after the color of the walls – green, brown, blue, red and gold.

In the Picture Gallery the visitors can admire portraits of Hungarian rulers, as well as a rare collection of six English tapestries from the 17th century, produced at the royal tapestry works in the English town of Mortlake. They were only rediscovered during a reconstruction in 1903.

In the square inner courtyard you find the superb fountain of St George, depicting the legendary knight slaying the dragon.
