Bratislava City Gallery - Pálffy Palace

The Bratislava City Gallery, featuring almost 33,000 works of art, is the second largest Slovak gallery of its kind. The gallery is housed in two historic palaces, the Mirbach Palace and the Pálffy Palace.

Among the permanent exhibitions at the Pálffy Palace, the visitors can find paintings and sculptures 1800 - 1950, 20th century Slovak Fine Art, Gothic Painting and Sculpture and Celtic Mint in Bratislava.

The palace was built by Count Leopold Pálffy in 1747. In the basement one can see the evidence of Celtic settlement (oppidum) from the 1st century AD, as well as traces from the Slavonic period. There is clear evidence of the immediate nearness of a mint from the Celtic period. There are also traces from a Roman palace from the 13th century. The rescue excavations, carried out between 1981 and 1987, revealed the basis of a Gothic palace.

In 1762, Mozart played a concert here at the age of six.

After the death of last owner, count János Pálffy, philanthropist, supporter and collector of art, the palace underwent extensive reconstruction and in 1987 it was assigned to the City Gallery of Bratislava.
