Litomysl Castle

Castles & Country Houses, Museums & Art Centres, Music
Litomysl Castle is one of the best examples of an Italian Renaissance chateau from the transalpine countries. Since 1999 on the UNESCO World Heritage list, it is also used for cultural events.

The castle, built between 1660 and 1680, has been in the hands of several important noble families such as Pernstein, Trauttmandorff, Lobkowicz, Waldstein-Wartenberg and Thurn und Taxis.

Apart from the furnished rooms, the castle has preserved the unique family theatre, where the composer Bedrich Smetana gave his first piano recital. He was born in the house opposite the castle.

The castle is also a location for important cultural events such as yearly Smetana's Litomysl Opera Festival.
