Örbyhus Castle

Castles & Country Houses, Gardens & Parks, Music
Örbyhus Castle, dating back to 1451 and today still in private hands, offers during the summer season guided tours of King Erik XIV’s prison, the castle park and the carriage museum. In addition, music lovers can enjoy a series of concerts here, called "Music in the Orangery", held in the beautiful 19th century Orangery, during the months of July and August.

The castle served in the first two centuries after its construction as a prison. In 1577, the deposed king Gustav Vasa’s eldest son, Erik XIV died here under mysterious circumstances.

Örbyhus became a baroque castle after it was acquired by Gustav Banér, the governor of Västergötland, in 1641. During the 18th century and 19th century the estate went through the hands of several historic families such as de Geer, von Platen, de la Gardie, Klingspor and Barnekow. that left their mark on Örbyhus.

In 1900 the castle was purchased by Count Carl Gustav von Rosen and stayed in the von Rosen family ever since.

The park was given its current appearance, when important renovations of the castle took place early 1900s, commissioned by Eugene von Rosen. The architect was Israel Wahlman.
