Castles & Country Houses, Museums & Art Centres
The Palazzo Vecchio (Old Palace), built between 1299 and 1314, is one of the most famous symbols of the city of Florence. Its function was to become the residence and workplace of the officials of the republic, but became a Ducal Palace in the 16th century under Cosimo I de Medici.

However later during his reign, Cosimo I de Medici decided to move his residence to the Pitti Palace and Palazzo Ducale was renamed Palazzo Vecchio. It was used for government offices and the place where valuables were kept.

Today the Palazzo Vecchio, with at its entrance the sculptures of Adam and Eve, the copy of Michelangelo's David and Hercules and Cacus, is home to the Museo dei Ragazzi and is housing offices of the Town Hall. The famous Cinquecento Hall, the largest room in Florence, is used special audiences and events.

The Palazzo Vecchio is located at the beautiful Piazza della Signoria (Signoria Square), where you can also find the Loggia dei Lanzi, the Fountain of Neptune and the equestrian statue of Cosimo I.
