István Széchenyi was the son of Count Ferenc and Countess Juliána Festetics de Tolna. Count Ferenc Széchenyi offered to the nation an enormous book, map and coin collection, and founded herewith the Hungarian National Museum and the National Széchenyi Library.
The castle is surrounded by a French park, together with a 2,6 km long linden tree alley with 645 trees, which were were planted by Zsuzsanna Barkóczy, the wife of Antal Széchenyi, the builder of the palace. István’s widow (Countess Crescentia Seilern) had a beautiful neo-Romanesque church built by Miklós Ybl and his statue stands in the park outside.
The Széchenyi Mausoleum in the middle of the village cemetery, is a pilgrimage site for the Hungarians.
Other attractions in the village are a stud farm and an open-air locomotive museum, together with a Nostalgia Train which rattles through the beautiful landscape in high season.
