Veliki Tabor Castle
Castles & Country Houses, Museums & Art Centres
Veliki Tabor Castle dates from the middle of 15th century and was built by the Rattkay family, a noble family from Hungary, who remained there until 1793, when the last member of the Rattkays died, leaving no male heir. Thereafter the estate was acquired through matrilineal succession by the Barons Kavanagh-Ballyane, and remained in their hands until the Second World War.
The present appearance of the castle dates back to the 16th century.
Veliki Tabor is today a museum and features several exhibitions, such as the exhibition around the Barons Kavanagh-Ballyane, presenting a selection from the family's heritage.
