Diocletian's Palace
Castles & Country Houses, Monuments & Sites
Diocletian's Palace is one the most impressive Roman ruins, located in the heart of the city of Split. It was built around the turn of the 4th century by Emperor Diocletian (c. 244 – 311) , who voluntarily gave up the throne of the Roman Empire.
The palace was a huge complex of buildings, covering around 3 ha, the palace itself and the annex buildings, housing also the military garrison. The Emperor’s apartments were located along the seaside.
The ancient fortress has become the old town of Split, with numerous shops, cafes, restaurants and also apartments, located in the old buildings on narrow streets of the palace/fortress.
