El Pardo Palace dates back to a 15th century Royal hunting lodge, however it was Charles V, who commissioned  the architect Louis de Vega to transform it into a palace. It consists of a complex of residences and gardens.

The residence of the King, the Zarzuela, is part of the complex.

The El Pardo has been the main residence of Franco, and since then it is used for visiting heads of state.
