Museums & Art Centres
The Museum of the Occupation of Latvia is a private museum, established in 1993, telling the story of the German and Soviet occupation of Latvia in the 20th century through documents, fragments of files, press, photos and films, as well as personal experiences of the inhabitants of Latvia
It is located in a building that was erected in the city center by the Soviets in 1971 to celebrate what would have been the 100th birthday of Lenin. Until 1991 it served as a museum commemorating the Red Latvian Riflemen, a military group formed in 1915 from the Imperial Russian Army to defend Latvia against the Germans.
You can also see a reconstruction of a barrack from a labor camp.
