Royal Carthusian Monastery of Valldemossa

Castles & Country Houses, Gardens & Parks, Museums & Art Centres
Royal Carthusian Monastery of Valldemossa dates back to 1309 when it was built as a Royal palace. It became a monastery in 1399. Chopin stayed here in winter 1838-1839 with George Sand, where he wrote his Preludes Op. 28.

George Sand, from her side, wrote her novel 'A Winter in Mallorca' here.

Valdemossa has much to offer. The church is decorated with frescoes from Bayeu, who was the brother in law of Goya. It has an old pharmacy, two art collections, the Chopin & George Sand collection and of course the beautiful gardens and terraces with its astonishing views.

The collections consist of a major collection of Spanish artists, such as Miro, and the fascinating collection of Archduke Ludwig Salvator of Austria.
