Lincoln Castle, dating from the 11th century by William the Conqueror, is open to the public as a museum. It displays the famous Magna Carta.
The castle, a former prison and law court ( the Crown Courts continue to this day), is a venue for events such as concerts and other public entertainment.
Note: Lincoln Cathedral's Magna Carta was being exhibited at the New York World's Fair in 1939 when World War II started. The document was kept safe at Fort Knox until the end of hostilities and returned to Lincoln in 1946.
