Anglesey Abbey

Castles & Country Houses, Gardens & Parks
Anglesey Abbey is set on the grounds of a former priory, dating back to the 11th century. The mansion goes back to 1538. In 1926 it was bought by the wealthy 1st Lord Fairhaven, who restored the house and gardens.

He filled the house with beautiful furniture, paintings, clocks and books, in order to create a cosy home.

The grounds, which are covering 40 ha (98 acres), got an impressive overhaul with several gardens, walks, classical statuary, an arboretum, a watermill, flowerbeds and topiary, in the 18th century style.

As Lord Fairhaven had no direct heirs, he left Anglesey Abbey to the National Trust, at his death in 1966. However part of the house remains private home of the Fairhaven family.
