Museums & Art Centres
The Austrian National Library (Österreichische Nationabibliothek), is one of the world's most beautiful historic Baroque libraries in the world, and is the largest library in Austria. It has more than 12 million items in its various collections and museums.

The different museums are:

  • The State Hall, built in the 18th century as part of the former Court Library, is a nearly 80 metres long and 20 metres high. It has a beautifully decorated dome, numerous frescos and contains over 200,000 tomes. Noteworthy also are the four magnificent Venetian globes, each with a diameter of over one meter. The wing was commissioned by Emperor Charles VI and constructed by the architect Fischer von Erlach.
  • The Literature Museum offers an intricate and open perspective on Austrian literature, through its permanent exhibition, communication programmes, events and special exhibitions.
  • The Globe Museum, housed in the Palais Mollard-Clary, displays over 250 exhibits such as exclusive terrestrial and celestial globes, globes of the moon and other planets as well as numerous astronomical instruments.
  • The Papyrus Museum features around 300 fascinating objects from the Department of Papyri as permanent exhibits. In addition to this, the museum holds also special exhibitions.
  • The Esperanto Museum, housed in the Palais Mollard-Clary, is dedicated to history of Esperanto spanning over 100 years, from the publication of the first textbook in 1887 and its rapid spread before the First World War to its suppression during the time of National Socialism and, ultimately, its use today.
  • The House of Austrian History is the republic’s first museum of contemporary history. Presented in a modern and insightful way, the new museum invites visitors to the Hofburg to examine and discuss Austria’s history.
