Belvedere House was build for Robert Rochfort, 1st Earl of Belvedere in 1740 as a hunting lodge, by the Palladian architect, Richard Cassels. Since 1982, the estate is owned by the Westmeath County Council and open to the public.
Belvedere is also used for cultural events such as weekend music festivals, and intimate garden theatre performances.
The House has been restored and together with the well maintained gardens and cultural events, it makes the estate (65 ha) an important tourist attraction (over 160.000 visitors yearly).
