Esterházy Palace, Tata

Castles & Country Houses
The Esterházy Palace in Tata has been in the hands of the historic Esterházy family from 1727 until its confiscation by the communists in the 20th century. Fortunately it has been renovated between 2018 and 2020, whereas all the furnished rooms and exhibition spaces offer a unique insight of the history of the palace, the owner family and the era.

Through the centuries Esterházy Palace has received historic personalities such as Franz Joseph I chose the estate of Miklós József Esterházy as the location of a diplomatic, large-scale, joint military exercise with the German Emperor Wilhelm II in 1897, and Charles I of Austria in 1921. Charles I, the then former emperor and king, arrived in Tata, at the palace of Ferenc Esterházy (VI), on 23 October, 1921, after losing the Battle of Budaörs. It was the failure of his second attempt to return. Here he was arrested and then interned in Tihany, and finally sent into exile to Madeira.
