Hôtel Beauharnais

Castles & Country Houses
The elegant Hôtel Beauharnais, German embassy since 1871, was built at the beginning of the 18th century by the architect Boffand (1667- 1754) and sold by him in 1715 to the marquis de Torcy, nephew and godson of the historical Colbert.

After it had passed through several hands, it was bought in 1804 by Eugène-Rose de Beauharnais, vice-king of Italy and Napoleon’s stepson. The hôtel was restored under the guidance of his mother, Empress Joséphine, by the architect Nicolas Bataille. Thus, the Egyptian porch on the courtyard side, and the Empire style interior decoration took place under his ownership.

However, due to the high costs, Prince Eugène never actually lived there and Emperor Napoleon used the hôtel from 1806.

In 1818, after the Napoleonic area, the hotel was acquired by the Prussian king. Bismarck lived there in 1862 , whereas it became the German embassy in 1871.

In 1944, during the liberation, the hotel was expropriated but was returned to Germany in 1961 by General De Gaulle.

The Hôtel de Beauharnais, with its beautiful interior, can be visited by guided tour. For reservations, see: https://service2.diplo.de/rktermin/extern/choose_category.do?locationCod...
