Mirehouse & Gardens

Castles & Country Houses, Gardens & Parks, Private Collections
Mirehouse was built in 1666 by the 8th Earl of Derby, but has been in the hands of the Spedding family since 1802. The House and grounds are open to the public.

The house not only contains an interesting collection furniture and portraits, but also a very unusual display of manuscripts. These include James Spedding's collection of Francis Bacon's works as well as letters from Wordsworth, Tennyson, Southey, Thomas Carlyle and John Constable.

In honour of these poetic connections, a biannual Poetry competition is held at Mirehouse.

The gardens include a walled bee garden, heather maze, orchard, wildflower meadow and rhododendron tunnel.
