Oxburgh Hall & Garden

Castles & Country Houses, Gardens & Parks
Oxburgh Hall was built around 1482 by Sir Edmund Bedingfield. Since then, the house has been continuously inhabited by the Catholic family Bedingfield. Today the ownership is in the hands of the national Trust, together with the 87 ha (215 acres) of grounds.

The Hall contains the family collections of furniture, portraits, books and many other artefacts, mainly in the Victorian Gothic setting as created by the Victorian 6th Baronet. He also built the church, which includes the stunning Dutch Tryptic altarpiece.

Now on loan from the Victoria & Albert Museum, the house contains also a series of embroideries made by Mary, Queen of Scots and Bess of Harwick, during the Queen's exile.

The gardens date from the 19th century and include the Walled Garden, with the Kitchen Garden and Orchard, The Parterre or 'French Garden' (as it is called by the family), The Herbaceous Border, the Wilderness gardens and My Lady's Wood.
