Phoenix Park, dating back to the 17th century, is a deer park, with 11 km perimeter wall enclosing 707 hectares (1,750 acres). It is said to be the largest enclosed park in Europe.
It was in 1662 that the Duke of Ormond, Charles II's Viceroy in Dublin, created a royal hunting park.
The park houses also the residence of the President of Ireland, Aras an Uachtarain, the Dublin ZOO, the Papal Cross, several monuments, Deerfield Residence (residence of the US ambassadors), Ashtown Castle....
