Monuments & Sites, Museums & Art Centres
The Tower of San Martino della Battaglia is a monumental construction, erected in 1878, to commemorate the Battle of San Martino. This battle is in fact a portion of the Battle of Solferino in 1859.
At the Battle of Solferino, the armies of Napoleon III and Victor Emmanuel II fought against the Austrian Army under Emperor Franz Joseph I on June 24, 1859. The battle was a victory for the Franco-Sardinian alliance and constituted a crucial step in the Italian Risorgimento (“the Resurgence”) and final unification of Italy in 1871. However the losses were enormous, 40.000 people.
Behind San Martino Tower we can find the museum* that has a collection of heirlooms, documents and memories from the battle of June 24th 1859, as well as significant records of other events related to the history of the Italian Risorgimento (literally “Resurgence”).
