Villa Medici, Castello

Castles & Country Houses, Gardens & Parks
Villa Medici, Castello, was the preferred country residence of Cosimo I de Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany (1519-1574), who lived here in his childhood. The gardens became the leading example of the Italian Renaissance garden style, and thus later influenced considerably the French formal gardens.

Cosimo, instructed Vasari, the famous architect, to extend, restore and embellish the villa. The sculptor Niccolo Tribolo was engaged to create the garden, its fountains and statues. The engineer Piero da San Casciano constructed a system of aqueducts to provide water for the estate.

A lunette of the Villa and its gardens was made in 1599 by Justus Utens, the Flemish painter, which can be admired at the new permanent gallery at Petraia Villa Medici

Today the villa is housing the headquarters of the Accademia della Crusta and the Opera del Vocabalario Italiano, whereas the gardens are open to the public.
