Bussaco Palace, today a hotel, was built in 1885 for King Luis I of Portugal and his wife, Maria Pia of Savoy. It is surrounded by formal gardens and the 101 ha Bussaco National Park.
The palace, in Manueline-Gothic style, was converted into a deluxe hotel in 1917, and is nowadays one of the most beautiful and historic hotels in the world.
