National Palace of Mafra, today a museum, has been built as the result of a vow of King João V (1689-1750) had made to built a convent, in case his wife, Queen Maria Anna of Austria, gave him children, which happened in 1711.
The former Royal palace-convent covers almost 40.000 m2 and has 1200 rooms. The king could afford building this gigantic complex, due to the gold from the colony of Brazil.
The palace has also a famous library, containing over 36.000 volumes.
The Royal palace-convent was frequently used by the Portuguese monarchs, whereas the last king of Portugal, Manuel II, left here for exile on the 5th of October 1910, after the country became a Republic.
