The National Museum Soares dos Reis, established in1833 and since 1942 located in the Carrancas Palace, houses an impressive collection mainly dedicated to Portuguese art of the 19th and 20th centuries, including painting, sculpture, furniture, metalwork and ceramics.
Noteworthy is the collection of works by the sculptor Soares dos Reis, obtained in 1911, the year in which the museum was also named after him.
The 18th century elegant palace of Carrancas was the former-residence of the Moraes e Castro family. Other historical figures have also resided here, such as Jean-de-Dieu Soult, the Duke of Wellington or Pedro I of Brazil.
