Castle Molsdorf

Castles & Country Houses, Gardens & Parks, Museums & Art Centres, Music
Castle Molsdorf dates back to the 16th century and was transformed into a Baroque castle in the 18th century by Gustav Adolph von Gotter. Since 1966 it is used as a museum and cultural events such as concerts, special exhibitions and lectures.

The museum includes the historical furnishings, décor and newly acquired collections. It also displays an erotica collection, compiled in the early 1980s, original and unique in Thuringia.
On the mezzanine, works by painter and graphic artist Otto Knöpfer (1911–1993) are shown. The estate of this important Thuringian artist, with landscapes and still lives, was acquired by the museum in 1998.

Most of the concerts at Moldorf Castle are held in the Banquet Hall.

the garden is a product of the 18th century when it was laid out in the French style by its owner Gustac Adolph Graf von Gotter, a diplomat in the service of Frederick the Great.  Later the garden was reworked in the English landscape style. Only few features of the baroque outline are intact, including a large avenue of lime trees.
