Château de Pau
Castles & Country Houses, Gardens & Parks, Museums & Art Centres
The Château de Pau was the birthplace of Henry IV of France and Navarre (1553). Today it is a National Museum which displays the works preserved from the days of Henry IV and especially during the restoration made by Louis-Philippe. It contains a beautiful collection of tapestries.
The castle dates back to the Middle-Ages and was a centre of the court of Navarre during the Renaissance. Henri d'Albret resided there with his wife Marguerite d'Angoulême, sister of François I. Under Louis-Philippe it was restored, but he never resided there. Afterwards the castle was used as a presidential residence, before it became the museum as we know it today.
