Château Royal d'Amboise's site dates already back to the Iron Age and a chateau was fully in use in the 9th century. Since it was seized by King Charles VII in 1434, it became a favourite of the French kings up to the days of Henry II and his wife, Catherine de Medici.
King François I was raised at Amboise and he invited here Leonardo da Vinci in 1515, who worked and lived at the manor Clos Lucé, which was connected to the castle by an underground passage.
The decline started in the 17th century until it was listed as a Monument Historique in 1840 and given back to Louis-Philippe’s heirs in 1873. Today the comte de Paris maintains the castle through the Fondation Saint-Louis, created by his father.
Amboise is also a venue for receptions and dinners.
