Castles & Country Houses, Event, Film & Wedding Hire, Gardens & Parks
Delapre Abbey dates back to the 12th century when it was a nunnery of the Cluniac order. After 1535 the Abbey became a country estate under the Tates and Bouveries families until 1943. Today the house, its large 202 ha (500 acres) park and 3.2 ha (8 acres) garden are owned by the local council.

It is thanks to the local people, in particular the Friends of Delapré Abbey, including substantial funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund, that slowly but surely the property comes into life again.

The gardens include several features such as the remains of the formal and semi-formal gardens, a Walled Garden, the hidden remains of a water garden...

The extensive park is a mixture of woodland and open grassland, cut through by pathways. The park contains an important historic monument, the Eleanor Cross. It was erected in 1291 by King Edward I in memory of his wife, Queen Eleanor of Castile, who had passed away in that year. Her funeral cortège halted at Delapré overnight en route from Harby near Lincolnshire to Westminster in London. The king erected at each of the funeral procession’s 12 resting places a memorial.

In addition, there is a lake and is also home to an equestrian centre, angling club and golf course.

Delapre Abbey is a venue for corporate and private events, such as receptions, weddings...
