Domaine de Sceaux, now a museum, dates back to 15th century. It was later owned by Colbert, who recreated the house and gardens, with the support of Charles Lebrun and Le Nôtre.
His son, Marquis de Seignelay, extended and embellished the domaine, with the support of the architect Jules Hardouin-Mansart and, again, of André Le Nôtre.
Unfortunately much was destroyed during the Revolution, however the Duke and Duchess de Tréviso constructed a new castle in 1856, whereby the park and gardens were restored.
The museum, created in 1937, is housed in a number of buildings such as the Château, the Orangery, the Pavillon de l’Aurore, the Petit Château and the Stables. It contains a beautiful collection of paintings, furniture, drawings, prints, sculptures, books and manuscripts, ceramics...
