Claverton Manor, now housing the American Museum, was built in 1820 replacing an earlier manor house. It was designed by Sir Jeffry Wyatville, commissioned by John Vivian, a barrister. The museum opened its doors in 1961, and is the only museum of American and decorative and folk art outside the US.
The house contains a variety of American antiques, decorative arts and other objects of interest. The Period Rooms cover a historical period from around 1690 to 1860.
The garden houses a recreation of George Washington Garden at Mount Vernon, and has still some features from the reconstruction period of the 1820s, such as stone work, grotto...
