Château de Joux, a fortress dating back to the 11th century, currently locates a museum of arms that displays more than 600 rare weapons dating from the early 18th to the 20th centuries. The castle also has the deepest well of France of about 101 meters.
The castle had many illustrious early owners, Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, Charles the Bold, Mary of Burgundy, Emperor Maximilian I, Margaret of Austria and Charles Quint. Each successive owner made improvements. It was finally annexed by France in 1678 by Louis XIV.
After that it was used as a prison, where some famous personalities have been the "guests" such as Mirabeau and von Kleist.
