Freudenstein Castle

Castles & Country Houses, Museums & Art Centres
Freudenstein Castle contains the world's largest private mineralogical collection "terra mineralia" (from the Bergakademie Freiberg, University of Technology). It displays over 80.000 items.

Its history dates back to 1168 when it was built on behalf of Magrave Otto II of Meissen, in order to protect the silver mines in Christiansdorf. Later, the Electors of Saxony, Moritz and Augustus were born at the castle. From the 18th century on it served military and other public purposes.
