Jardim do Cerco
Gardens & Parks
Jardim do Cerco is a Baroque forest and garden of 8 ha, offering water ponds, waterfalls, wide paths, shady trees, and the Horta dos Frades, Garden of the Friars, with medical plants.
The garden was part of the gigantic palace-convent of Mafra, commissioned King João V (1689 – 1750), and constructed by the German architect Johann Friedrich Ludwig.
These buildings plans of the king were the result of a vow he had made to built a convent, in case his wife, Queen Maria Anna of Austria, gave him children, which happened in 1711.
