Monastery Wernberg Castle

Castles & Country Houses, Monuments & Sites, Music
Monastery Wernberg Castle (Kloster Schloss Wernberg) is a historic place where you can spend a peaceful day, or several days at the monastery's guesthouse, far away from everyday stress. Guests at the monastery dine on fresh produce from the Monastery's garden and farm, with bread from the on-site bakery.

The monastery’s own shop sells high quality food products, teas and natural cosmetics, produced at the monastery itself or by local farms. The attached training centre is regularly used for presentations, courses, seminars and workshops.

The castle is also hosting concerts.

Wernberg castle has a long history and was first documented in 1227 when it was built by the Duke Bernhard von Spanheim. Later it came into the hands of the Habsburgs whereas in 1519 it came into possession of Georg von Khevenhüller (1533 – 1587), the governor of Carinthia. He transformed Wernberg into an elegant summer palace. Khevenhüller, who made an impressive career, also came into the possession of the castle of Hochosterwitz, which is still the family seat today.

Later, in 1672, Wernberg was acquired by the Ossiach monastery, and stayed in their hands until its forced abolition in 1783. Thereafter the castle changed hands several times until 1935, when it was acquired by the present owners, the Missionary Sisters of the Precious Blood.
