Castles & Country Houses, Gardens & Parks
Achamore Gardens is a 20 ha (50 acres) sub-tropical garden, created after 1944 by Sir James Horlick, when he became owner of the Isle of Gigha and subsequently of Achamore House. Sir James had a particular interest in Rhododendrons, Azaleas and Camellias.
After his death the Isle of Gigha went through a difficult period until it was purchased by its inhabitants. Today the Island, and the gardens, are in the hands of the Isle of Gigha Heritage Trust, whereas Achamore House was sold and became in private ownership.
