Pfeilburg Castle, the building of the present museum has at its core, the “Schwartzturm” (Black Tower), which dates back to the thirteenth century and is one of the few remaining preserved mediaeval residential towers in Styria. The building itself was constructed in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries and was the owners’ residence.
The castle is names after its first owner, Hans Pfeilburg, who acquired the property in 1490. In 1691, Christoph Liscutin bought the house and built Austria's first tobacco factory here.
The Pfeilburg Museum has two sub-museums. The “Kruzitürken Museum”, tells the story of Fürstenfeld, the city on the border. The second sub-museum is dedicated to the production of tobacco products and the smoking.
