La Mortella, Gardens & Music

Gardens & Parks, Music
"La Mortella" (place of the myrtles), the magnificent garden, was created by Susana Walton, the wife of one of the most important twentieth-century British composers,  William Walton. There is a Greek Theatre and Concert Hall.

Today the property is in the hands of the Fondazione William Walton.

The garden, with tropical and Mediterranean plants, was designed by Russell Page.

During the year there are three different concert seasons: in Spring and in Autumn the chamber music recitals are held on Saturdays and Sundays in the indoor Recital Hall; in Summer the Festival of Youth Orchestras with symphonic concerts held every Thursday evening in the Greek Theatre. These concerts are always performed by young musicians (maximum age 32), following the express wishes of William Walton that La Mortella should help young talented musicians to spread their wings.
