Castles & Country Houses, Monuments & Sites
Pöllau Castle became a monastery after the death in 1482 of its owner, Hans von Neuberg, who had stipulated that the castle had to be converted into an an Augustinian monastery, which was realized, finally, in 1504. Today, the castle is owned by the market town of Pöllau, and used for guided tours, event venue, exhibition space, the Pöllau-Vorau-Joglland Music School, the tourist office...
The building complex, as we know it today, dates from the renovations and expansions made between 1677 and 1779. The castle has a Large Fresco Hall, the former monastery Library, also with frescoes and the former refectory. Its mighty dome was designed after the Basilica of St. Peter in Rome. The castle park is also shown at the end of the guided tour.
