St Paul's Outside the Walls

St Paul's Outside the Walls was consecrated in the year 324 by Pope Sylvester, and founded by Emperor Constantine I, over St. Paul's burial place. The cathedral was heavily damaged by a fire in 1823, but was restored and reopened in 1840.

It is one of Rome's four ancient papal basilica's. 

The elegant cloister, with its cloister garden, dates from 1220 - 1241.

It was the seat of the Latin Patriarch of Alexandria from 1215 until 1964.
