The castle of Greillenstein was first mentioned as a fortified castle in 1313. The present building dates from the 16th century and was for a long time was used for administrative purposes. Since 1534 the castle is in the hands of the barons, later counts von Kuefstein. Today the family opened the castle to the public.

Castle Greillenstein has a lot to offer: you can visit the museum, with the possibility of a guided tour during which you will see around half of the castle's 60 rooms, such as the famous courtroom, chapel, library and Turks' Hall, a park and the dwarves' garden with an interesting collection of sandstone dwarves, concerts, two holiday apartments, whereas the castle is also a venue for weddings.

The present building was constructed between 1570 and 1604 by an Italian master builder, and hasn't changed ever since.
